There are a lot of words and terms in Thai language,
which seems to be created just for disinformation,
like the Thai term for “just a moment”, Baep Diaw,
which is nothing more than the distortion of time.
What do You think, how long is a moment ?
Thai people seem to have another definition
for “just a moment”.
Baep diaw is a trappy term !
It could mean, just a second,
but mostly it means, sometime… anytime…I don´t know, when…
My longest Baep Diaw experience lasted about 36 hours.
One of our boys has been sent to the market,
to buy herbs.
We told him, please hurry up !
He answered: Baep Diaw !
…and came back 36 hours later, without the herbs.
As an excuse he said: Baep Diaw Eng !
The word “Eng” trivializes the meaning of Baep Diaw even more,
it was just a very brief moment.

So be warned about the Thai term Baep Diaw,
in the end there is no specific timescale
attached to this term.
Baep Diaw is just a distortion of time.

  1. So true. Pap Diew could last for an eternity, or a millisecond. Never encountered anything like it.
I’m up at Webster University Thailand and having been around the town of Hua Hin for a few months now, I seem to hear that term everywhere. It could be the Sabai Sabai nature of the folks here as well.
